Strong, Tooth-Colored Fillings Make Smiles Shine
Because tooth decay can strike anyone at any time, don't be surprised if you come down with a cavity. Acids from bacteria that live in plaque attack tooth enamel and deplete minerals, which results in a hole in the tooth. These bacteria thrive on sugars, so people who regularly consume soft drinks, candy, or other sugary foods, as well as those who do not practice effective daily oral healthcare, are prone to develop cavities. By limiting sugar intake, brushing and flossing regularly, and rinsing your mouth after consuming sugary drinks or foods, you may deter some tooth decay. When a cavity forms, the only way to solve the problem is with a filling.
Dr. De Angelo prefers to preserve the all-white beauty of a smile, so he places composite resin, tooth-colored fillings instead of dark silver amalgams. Resin fillings are durable and won't change shape or leak like amalgams can. They also contain no mercury, a heavy metal found in dental amalgam. To place a tooth-colored filling, Dr. De Angelo first prepares a tooth by removing tooth decay, then he places a custom-colored bit of liquid composite resin into the cavity. With a curing light, he hardens the resin to a solid state. After sculpting and polishing the filling, he makes sure that the patient's bite comes together properly.
