Gum Disease Steals Smiles and Poses General Health Risks
About 50-80% of the population has some degree of gum disease. Also known as periodontal disease, or gingivitis in the early stages, gum disease causes gum recession, bone loss, and ultimately, tooth loss. Recent research has linked gum disease to stroke, heart attack, dementia, diabetes complications, and low birth weight. The first symptoms of gum disease are so mild, you may not know that you have a problem. For instance, painless bleeding when brushing or flossing teeth, slight swelling, redness, or tenderness may indicate early-stage gum disease.
At your regular, six-month checkups and cleanings, we'll inspect your gums for signs of disease. Should we find reason for concern, we'll recommend solutions. Some cases require only a few alterations in brushing and flossing or a new mouth rinse. Other cases need scaling, root planing, and antibiotic therapy to quell the disease. Advanced gum disease, known as periodontitis, may require surgery and specialized care by a periodontist. Dr. De Angelo will help you determine the best therapy for your condition. If you notice bleeding gums, call to schedule a checkup.
