Is Gum Disease Hereditary?

Your genes are responsible for some of the best things about your smile. The spacing, shape, and even color of your teeth can all be handed down from generation to generation. But did you know that dangerous conditions like gum disease can run in your family, too? Here’s how you can recognize the symptoms of this periodontal problem, and what you can do to lower your risk of developing it whether it runs in your family or not!
What is Gum Disease?
Gum disease or periodontal disease is an infection of the gums caused by oral bacteria. The first stage is known as gingivitis, which is a reversible inflammation. If left untreated, it can develop into a condition known as periodontitis, which can affect the ligaments and bones underneath the gums and eventually cause tooth loss. Symptoms of this condition include:
- Receding gums
- Bleeding while brushing or flossing your teeth
- Bad breath or taste in the mouth
- Sensitive teeth
- Loosening teeth
- Shifting teeth
- Bite changes
- Changes in how your aligners or dentures fit
Is it Possible to Prevent Hereditary Gum Disease?
The great news is that just because gum disease runs in your family doesn’t mean it’s inevitable that you’ll develop it. If you do your part to protect your smile with excellent oral hygiene, prevention is possible. To that end, be sure to:
- Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush, and floss daily.
- Use an antibacterial mouthwash.
- Visit your dentist every six months for your routine preventive exams and cleanings.
- Don’t smoke, vape, or use any other tobacco products.
- Eat a low sugar, low carbohydrate diet full of fresh fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains.
If you notice any signs of gum disease, schedule an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible. With early intervention, gingivitis could be reversible, as can many of the dangerous side effects such as tooth loss and jawbone deterioration.
Remember, while genetics can play an important role in your likeliness to develop gum disease, that doesn’t mean this condition is inevitable. To keep your mouth healthy and strong, be sure to maintain excellent oral hygiene, and reach out to your dentist at the first sign of periodontal problems for best results!
