Were you drawn to Invisalign because of their discreet, see-through trays? You’re not alone! Over the last two decades, more than 12 million patients have chosen to straighten their teeth without the metal. What many are surprised by, however, is that the aligners can discolor. Since yellow trays can make your teeth look yellow as well, it’s important to take proactive measures to keep your trays clean and clear. With this in mind, read on to learn a few common causes of yellow aligners and what you can do to prevent yours from discoloring!

The Leading Cause of Yellow Aligners

Just like your teeth, your aligners can be stained by coffee, wine, soda, and other dark-colored beverages. Even with a straw, these drinks can cling to your aligners, discoloring them over time. That’s why it’s so important that you remove them before eating or drinking anything other than water!

How to Properly Clean Your Aligners

Of course, another cause of yellow aligners is improper care. If you don’t clean them properly, it won’t take long for stubborn stains to surface. That’s why we recommend rinsing your aligners each time you take them out and before you put them back in. When it comes time to clean them, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and some lukewarm water to gently clean each surface. The last step is to rinse them one more time before putting them back in your mouth.

Note: never use harsh chemicals, like bleach. Not only do they contain toxins that are not safe to ingest, but they can warp your aligners, rendering them virtually useless.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Using the Cleaning Crystals

If you’ve tried the previously mentioned measures, but your aligners are still yellow, then try using your cleaning crystals. You’ll find a few packets of these in your welcome kit, and they are both effective and easy to use. Here’s what you do:

  • Get a glass of water (make sure it’s not too hot) and gently place your aligners in them.
  • Add a packet of cleaning crystals to the water.
  • Gently shake the container to dissolve the cleaning crystals.
  • Let your aligners soak for 15 minutes or so.
  • Carefully remove your aligners and rinse them with clean water before putting them back in your mouth.

Between best practices like cleaning them after each meal and not drinking coffee with them in, you can enjoy stain-free aligners throughout your entire treatment!
