Holiday Tips to Keep Your Mouth Healthy While Traveling

Whether for business or leisure, your dental health can pay the price if you’re not careful. Your risk of cavities and gum disease can increase during the season. Don’t fret. Here are 5 tips to keep your mouth healthy during the holidays, even if you’re away from home.

1. Brush After Every Meal

If you’re on the road or attending a holiday gathering, you’ll be surrounded by many snacks. No matter if you’re grabbing food from a drive-thru or sneaking some Christmas cookies, your teeth will have more residue on them throughout the day. Strive to brush your teeth after every meal to remove food and plaque. You’ll keep your breath fresh and your mouth healthy.

2. Don’t Forget to Floss

You might be tired after a long day, but don’t forget to brush your teeth before going to bed. Your toothbrush can’t reach everywhere, like between your teeth. The remnants of holiday foods can create an accumulation of plaque buildup, which can lead to gum disease. Daily flossing will clean the areas your toothbrush can’t to keep your gums healthy.

3. Create an Oral Hygiene Kit

You can make it easier to brush and floss with a travel oral hygiene kit. Include a soft-bristled toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste, and waxed floss. Pack any necessary cleaning products for oral appliances. You can stick to your oral hygiene routine during the holidays, even while you’re waiting at the airport.

4. Watch What You Eat

Although many seasonal foods will make your mouth water, it’s best to be picky about what you put on your plate. Moderate sugary foods and drinks, as well as starches, including stuffing. They feed cavity-causing bacteria that can erode your enamel. Instead, choose fresh fruits and vegetables to support a healthy smile.

5. Drink More Water

Dehydration can sneak up on you when you’re on the road. Drink at least eight 8-oz glasses of water daily to stay hydrated. H2O will also keep your mouth moist to combat oral bacteria.
