5 Tips for Safely Storing Your Toothbrush

You may be diligent about brushing your teeth at least twice a day, but are you exercising the same level of care when it comes to storing your toothbrush? If you aren’t mindful about where you put your toothbrush when you’re not using it, it could increase the risk of harmful bacteria and particles building up among the bristles. Your dentist is here with 5 important storage tips that can help ensure that your toothbrush stays in great condition.

1. Keep Your Toothbrush in a Holder

When you’re done with your toothbrush, you may be in the habit of simply leaving it lying on its back. This can be a bigger mistake than you realize; it can allow any remaining water to pool, making it easier for bacteria to accumulate. It’s therefore worth investing in a holder that will keep your toothbrush in a vertical position.

2. Make Sure Your Toothbrush Holder Stays Clean

Of course, if you use a toothbrush holder, you should make a point of cleaning it frequently. After all, it’s a prime target for dust, dried toothpaste, and harmful organisms. Some holders can simply be placed in the dishwasher. If that isn’t an option, you can always simply use old-fashioned soap and water instead.

3. Do Not Use a Toothbrush Cover

You may think that covering the head of your toothbrush is a good way to keep it safe from germs. But while a toothbrush cover does offer protection, it has the side effect of keeping any moisture trapped, resulting in an environment that encourages bacteria to grow. In short, it’s better to leave the head of your toothbrush uncovered so that it has the chance to air dry.

4. Keep Your Toothbrush Away from the Toilet

When you flush your toilet, germs and various particles are released into the air – and they could end up settling on your toothbrush if you’re not careful. You should therefore take the time to make sure that your toothbrush is as far away from your toilet as possible, with three feet being the absolute minimum distance.

5. Avoid Sharing Toothbrushes by Accident

You definitely don’t want to pick up the wrong toothbrush by mistake. As such, make sure that you keep your toothbrush in a place where it is unlikely to be mixed up with someone else’s. Ideally, you may want to invest in unique-looking toothbrushes for your whole family just so that everyone can always be sure that the brush they pick up is their own.
