Don’t Panic! Here’s What to Do if You Lose a Dental Filling

Losing a dental filling can catch you off guard. You might feel sudden sensitivity, notice a rough edge on your tooth, or even experience pain when eating or drinking. While it can be alarming, the good news is that there are simple steps you can take to protect your tooth until you’re able to see your dentist. Knowing what to do if a filling falls out can make all the difference in preventing further damage.

Recognize the Signs of a Lost Filling

Sometimes it’s obvious when a filling falls out—you may feel it come loose or notice a missing piece. Other times, the signs are more subtle. You might experience increased sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods, or feel a sharp or uneven surface with your tongue.

If something doesn’t feel right, it’s best to assume the filling may be compromised and take precautions right away.

Rinse and Clean the Area

The first step is to gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water. This helps clean the area and reduce the risk of bacteria entering the exposed part of your tooth.

Be careful when brushing around the affected tooth. You’ll want to keep the area clean, but avoid aggressive brushing that could cause discomfort or further irritation.

Protect the Tooth

Without a filling, your tooth is more vulnerable to damage and sensitivity. If possible, try to avoid chewing on that side of your mouth until you can see your dentist.

Over-the-counter dental cement, which is available at most pharmacies, can be used as a temporary solution to cover the exposed area. Sugar-free gum can also be placed over the cavity in a pinch, but this should only be a short-term fix.

These measures won’t replace a professional repair, but they can help protect your tooth in the meantime.

Manage Pain and Sensitivity

It’s common to feel some discomfort after losing a filling, especially when eating or drinking. To manage sensitivity, stick to soft foods and avoid anything too hot, cold, or sugary.

Over-the-counter pain relievers can help reduce discomfort if needed. You may also find relief by using toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth.

If you experience severe pain, swelling, or signs of infection, it’s important to seek dental care as soon as possible.

Save the Filling if You Can

If you happen to find the filling that fell out, keep it and bring it with you to your dental appointment. While it may not always be reusable, your dentist can evaluate whether it can be reattached or if a new filling is needed.

Either way, having the original filling may provide helpful information about your restoration.

Call Your Dentist Promptly

Even if you’re not in pain, you should contact your dentist as soon as possible. A lost filling leaves your tooth exposed to bacteria, which can lead to decay or infection if left untreated.

Your dentist will assess the condition of the tooth and determine whether the filling can be replaced or if another type of restoration, such as a crown, is necessary.

Acting quickly helps prevent more complex and costly issues down the road.

When Is It a Dental Emergency?

In many cases, a lost filling isn’t an immediate emergency—but it shouldn’t be ignored. If you’re experiencing significant pain, swelling, or difficulty eating, it may require urgent care.

Otherwise, scheduling an appointment within a few days is typically sufficient to address the issue before it worsens. Taking prompt, simple steps can protect your tooth and keep a minor problem from becoming a major one.
